Bespoke Safari Experience at Rhino Sands Safari Camp

While East Africa may be famous for its classic Meru-style tents and ‘out of Africa’ settings, travellers can soon expect a safari of the same standard at a new tented camp set to be opened in Kwa-Zulu Natal’s Manyoni Private Game Reserve – Rhino Sands Safari Camp.

Introducing Rhino Sands Safari Camp

Specifically designed to bring an authentic safari experience in traditional East African style to Kwa-Zulu Natal, Rhino Sands is a luxury tented camp situated on a peninsula in the Msunduze River. While the camp is currently still under construction, it is expected to be completed in August and the doors will officially open to the public on the 1st of October.

Small, intimate and stylish

Seeking to recreate the golden age of safari, Rhino Sands focuses on elegance and exclusivity. The entire camp has been built on raised wooden platforms within the riverine forest and has been designed and decorated with an emphasis on the romance of the classical safari experience, with a nod towards traditional safari styling but including all the modern luxuries.

The main camp area features a reception office, casual bar lounge space, formal lounge, cozy fireplace, and both formal and casual dining areas. There is also a large boma area for guests to enjoy dining fireside beneath the stars.

Not your average ‘tent’

With just four individually appointed tents, the camp can accommodate a maximum of eight guests at any given time, ensuring an exclusive experience for each and every guest. While the word ‘tent’ may conjure up images of camping – there is nothing rustic about the set up at Rhino Sands. The four suites boast custom-built private canvas tents, each located amid the beautiful riverine forest, and featuring their own private living area, outdoor shower, and swimming pool. The tents open completely on three sides, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the surrounding wilderness. If guests would like to sleep with the canvas left open. there is a mosquito netting which can be zipped closed and all beds also have mosquito nets which can be draped closed at night.

Tent in Progress

One the best features of the tents is that they each have a view down onto the riverbed below. While the river is dry most of the year, it is often frequented by wildlife and guests at Rhino Sands will have front-row seats to this wildlife show.

Disconnect and Reconnect

Rhino Sands Safari Camp is the vision of the owner-management team from Rhino River Lodge. The camp is a reflection of their love of safari and commitment to conservation, and the vision behind its creation was to offer safari guests an intimate way to reconnect with nature and one another.

While Rhino Sands certainly doesn’t skimp on the luxuries, the camp will be operated in an eco-friendly manner that places minimal strain on the environment. In addition to the fact that it will run entirely on solar electricity, it has been constructed with very little disruption to the natural forest and does not dominate the surrounding bush at all. In fact, it blends so seamlessly into the trees, that the camp is barely visible from above…except for the solar panels that is!

Rhino Sands Safari Camp

While Rhino Sands will provide wifi in all guest rooms, this will only be turned on in between meal and safari times, and guests are kindly asked to refrain from using their devices in public spaces. This is in-line with the camp’s mission to encourage guests to disconnect from their busy lives and reconnect with the environment and with one another

Wildlife Viewing

Set within the Manyoni Private Game Reserve, one of the premier game-viewing destinations in Kwa-Zulu Natal, a stay at Rhino Sands Safari Camp includes two daily safari drives. Some of the wildlife guests could expect to see include the Big 5, as well as African wild dogs, cheetahs, and many more common African animals.

As the reserve has strict rules regulating the number of vehicles allowed to traverse the roads or be present at a wildlife sighting, guests are afforded intimate game viewing experiences that place less stress on the animals and environment.

Other nearby activities include:

• Elephant interaction-approximately 30-minute self-drive, inside Manyoni Private Game Reserve
• St. Lucia-approximately 2-hour self-drive, estuary boat hippo and croc tours, crocodile center
• Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park-approximately 1 hour self-drive to gate
• Mkhuze Game Reserve-approximately 1 hour self-drive to gate
• Jozini Dam-approximately 1.5 hour self-drive, tiger fishing available

In this way, the team at Rhino Sands hopes to inspire guests to truly appreciate the magic of the African bush.
