Child-Friendly Safaris for Adventurous Families

family friendly adventure

Some of Africa’s most beautiful natural environments make the perfect playgrounds for family-friendly adventures.

Families come in different shapes and sizes. What might be the ideal vacation for one family, could be a total nightmare for another. One fact is consistent among all families though; spending quality time together matters. And for a family that enjoys being outdoors and active, what better way to bond than on a safari in Africa?

Why go on a family safari?

  • Up-close and personal wildlife viewing encounters
  • Experience new things and broaden horizons
  • Make memories that will last a lifetime
  • Superb accommodation and dining
  • Multigenerational fun
  • Cultural learning experiences

Safari holidays offer something for everyone, and where you decide to go depends a lot on what you want to get out of your family holiday. Relaxation, adventure, nature, world class wildlife, culture, history – you can find it all in Africa. Safaris are also an excellent alternative to the traditional vacation as they provide a wonderful balance between activity and rest.

While some safari destinations don’t allow kids under a certain age to stay, many camps and lodges welcome children of all ages and offer a range of activities suitable for the whole family.

Here are a few family-friendly adventures in Africa that have been manicured with young travellers in mind:

Located in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Camp Kalahari is repeatedly cherry-picked for being one of the best family-friendly safari destinations in Africa. This traditional, yet relaxed safari camp is ideal for families seeking fun and adventure, without having to sacrifice all the creature comforts of a luxury lodge. Find out more...

Accommodation is in traditional Meru tents with en-suite bathrooms. A family tent is available, comprising two twin tents with an inter-leading bathroom.
Activities include camping under the stars, Bushman-guided walks (to learn about their ancient customs, traditions and survival methods), learning how to make bows and arrows, quad bike riding (over 12), guided horseback trails, visiting Chapman’s Baobab and encountering the hundreds of meerkats that inhabit the area.

Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill Bush Homes are situated in a private reserve within South Africa’s beautiful malaria-free Waterberg. Welcoming children of all ages, the two uniquely designed bush homes offer a long list of family-friendly safari activities, and are the perfect choice for adventurous families. Find out more...

Horse riding through the reserve and experiencing up-close encounters with wildlife, is the main attraction at Ants. Other child-orientated activities include bug and spoor walks, educational snake talks and archery.
